Jetty of Jitters
Tracy Peacock
It was January and beach holiday time. We piled into our family's Holden with bags, boxes, my bright pink beach towel and brand-new cricket set from Santa.
Every morning, vegemite toast remnants stuck in my throat, I trudged to the Safety Bay jetty for swimming lessons.
While the other kids hurtled into the Indian Ocean, I stood frozen, waiting for my breathing to ease, sweaty feet pinned to the pier between rotting fish guts and crusty seagull crap.
After they convinced me to dive in, I'd paddle through the water, eyes rapidly sweeping the dark depths from every direction, looking for Jaws.
