Turning Sleepless Nights into Brighter Days: Cele Richardson's Vision for Youth Mental Health

Sleep is more than rest - it's a cornerstone of mental health. Yet for many young people, especially those living with depression, good sleep is elusive. Cele Richardson is determined to change that.

Cele's research focuses on one of the most overlooked factors in adolescent mental health: sleep disturbance. Her Raine Priming Grant project, "Goodnight, Poor Sleep: Evaluating a Low-Barrier Solution for Youth Sleep and Mental Health", aims to deliver a practical, accessible interventions that improves sleep and, in turn, mental wellbeing for young people. With co-funding support by the Raine Foundation, the Cockell Bequest, and the BrightSpark Foundation - Cele is developing solutions that can be scaled and implemented widely.

This builds on her earlier success with a Raine Research Collaboration Award, supported by Charter Hall, which supported her work on bright light therapy as an adjunct treatment for depression. That project not only advanced clinical understanding but also fostered collaborations across WA and internationally, demonstrating how early investment in research sparks global impact.

Cele's work is a perfect example of why the Raine Foundation invests in emerging leaders. By backing innovative ideas at their inception, Raine helps researchers like Cele tackle urgent health challenges - transforming lives today and shaping healthier futures tomorrow.

As Dr Cele Richardson's research grows, so does the promise of a world where better sleep means better mental health for every young person.
