Barry and Rolo

A former Olympic gymnastics coach, Barry had many great achievements under his belt. On the outside, it seemed like he was doing well for himself. But after a few business decisions gone wrong, and an overwhelming amount of stress, Barry found himself and his dog, Rolo, in a situation he'd never imagined.

Barry had been sleeping in his car with Rolo outside McDonalds for six months when he engaged with a church group and was linked to the Uniting WA HASS (Homelessness Accommodation Support Service) program. Having Rolo with him made it harder to find a place to stay, but he couldn't bear the thought of giving up his other half – Rolo was all he had left.

He was referred to a HASS case worker, where he was supported over the next few months as he found his feet.
Eventually, he was offered a place in Uniting WA transitional accommodation. The best part? Rolo was welcome, too.
Getting the keys to his house was a surreal moment.

Upon entering the property, Rolo curiously followed Barry around the house, as they both tried to take in their surroundings. Barry couldn't believe it – he kept touching the walls in disbelief. He didn't know if he would have a place to call home again, let alone somewhere safe and quiet.

"I can't describe it...when I woke up that morning, I rolled over and I thought, "where am I?" And I suddenly realised I could get up and walk around to the toilet and the shower and everything else. It was unreal."

Barry spoke of his plan to get some curtains, a nice big rug and to (jokingly) keep people out!

Over the next few months, Barry began to make friends with his neighbours and have people over for dinner every now and again. He grew to love the parks that surrounded his house, where he could walk Rolo.

Now, Barry and Rolo are in the property long-term and are embracing a peaceful next chapter of life. When Rolo isn't after a treat, he enjoys relaxing and getting tummy scratches. As for Barry, he's just happy to have his own space, with his best friend by his side.
